I'd been a reporter for more than 20 years, but had never tried to sell my personal stories to publications. Then in 1998, a friend said she was having a lot of success writing essays and suggested I give it a try
.
As with every new endeavor, this one had a steep learning curve. However, I eventually figured the whole thing out - which publications are looking for stories, how to pitch them, and most importantly, how to write stories they want to buy. I'm happy to report that my essays have appeared in major publications across the U.S. (House Beautiful, Mother Earth News, and Winds to name a few) and I am writing a popular syndicated column.

The demand for personal stories has grown dramatically over the past few years. National publications such as Women's Health, Newsweek, and Reader's Digest are all looking for writers who can write compelling stories about their experiences in life. What does it take?
