Classes That Nourish the Heart and Mind

As teachers we all know how important it is for students to learn to communicate in writing. Test results aside, they must master the fundamentals of grammar, punctuation, and logical thinking in order to function effectively in the world.

But beneath the mechanics of putting words on paper another larger issue looms - self awareness. Students who have not been encouraged explore their hearts and minds skim the surface of life. Given the many and pressing issues facing our world at this time, the last thing that's needed are young people who don't know their own minds.

One of the best ways for students to get to know themselves while mastering the fundamentals of written communications is by interacting with the natural world. Nature is not only endlessly diverse and fascinating, but it awakens the senses, encourages questions, and provokes emotional as well intellectual responses.

About Nature's Call

Nature's Call is an online writing program for high school and junior college students. It is designed to supplement and support the efforts of teachers in the classroom. Students learn the fundamental writing skills they need to communicate effectively by interacting with and responding to the natural world. In addition, they receive feedback from one of our experienced instructors who is available throughout the course. The goals of all Nature's Call classes are simple:

- Get students excited about the natural world and their relationship to it.

- Encourage students to write about their experiences with the natural world.

- Use interactions with nature to teach students practical writing skills, such as: information gathering, organziation, exposition, description, vocabulary, character development, persuasion, how to express their opinions, etc.

- Give students an opportunity to apply those skills to writing practical projects such as letters, essays, and editorials.

- Give students practical and constructive feedback designed help them become more effective communicators.

Nature's Call lessons can be adapted to almost any classroom setting. If you elect to have an online instructor available, he or she will also assist teachers in customizing the material for the grade and skill level of your students.
