The Wonder of an Egg

The date was 1870; the place, St. Petersburg, Russia; the occasion, the inheritance of the Faberge jewelry firm by the founder’s son Peter Carl Faberge. Though only 24 years of age at the time, Carl Faberge had already laid the groundwork for the meteoric rise to fame he was about to enjoy.

Educated abroad in England, Germany, Italy and France, Carl Faberge was an avid art historian. Of particular interest to him were the techniques employed by goldsmiths, enamel and metalworkers and fine gem cutters in centuries past. Many of these techniques had been all but forgotten until Faberge revived and applied them to his own groundbreaking work.

What made Carl Faberge so special? He was that rare combination of creative genius, master technician and savvy businessman. Not only was he capable of creating exquisite pieces of art, thereby earning himself a place in history, but he was a consummate salesman as well. Because he knew how to describe his work even before he had the work completed, his customers were always eager to buy.
Although Faberge produced an astonishing variety of work, from enamel cigarette cases and flowers cut from precious stones to the likenesses of animals and stoneware, he is most well-known for the 49 Easter eggs he produced for the last two Czars of Russia. The first of these, commissioned by Czar Alexander III in 1885 for his Czarina Alexandra, was kept a complete secret until the moment it was unveiled on Easter Sunday. It had been agreed upon between the two men that the egg would contain a surprise, but what that surprise would be only Faberge knew. When queried by the Czar, Faberge would only say, “Your Majesty will be satisfied.”

When the long awaited day arrived, Faberge did not disappoint. The egg, which opened to reveal an intricate movable mechanism wrought in gold and encrusted with jewels stunned even the jaded palettes of Russia’s noble class. So pleased was the Czar with Faberge’s work that he made him the official Imperial Court Goldsmith and gave him a standing order for 2 eggs to be produced each year: one for his wife the Czarina and one for his mother the Dowager Empress.

Carl Faberge was to receive many more honors during his illustrious career. Among them was his appointment as court goldsmith for Sweden and Norway and the display of 3 of his remarkable eggs in the 1900 World’s Fair in Paris France. There he was awarded the title of Master of the Goldsmiths of France.
Another of Faberge’s accomplishments was the creation of the “Work Master System.”  In this system, Faberge would train the most gifted goldsmiths he could find, entrusting them with the execution of his incredibly intricate and sophisticated designs. Not only did this system free him to pursue the business side of his venture, but it ultimately ensured that his accumulated knowledge and skill would never be lost.
Carl Faberge flourished in Russia for almost 48 years before the rise of the Bolsheviks in 1918 and the resulting revolution forced him to close shop and leave the country. He settled in Lausanne, Switzerland where he lived until his death in 1920. There followed a long, 70-year period in which no one in the Faberge family practiced Carl’s craft. The result was that by 1989, despite the sincere efforts of his grandsons, his business could not be revived due to a lack of technical knowledge. Thanks to the foresight of Carl’s “Work Master System” however, a Work Master company, known as the Victor Mayer Firm, was eventually located. Victor Mayer’s descendents had preserved what their founder had learned from Carl Faberge and so were capable of carrying on Faberge’s work in all its exacting detail. It’s a tradition they uphold and continue to expand upon today.

In the time honored tradition of Carl Faberge, we at Nickolai Gurgeiff are proud to offer crystal eggs produced by the studios of Rosvuz Design Firm in St. Petersburg. These eggs, based on original Faberge drawings, are executed with exquisite precision and attention to detail. The Rosvuz Design Firm was established in 1878 and has long been known for its superior workmanship and style. One look at one of these eggs will convince you that the standards set so long ago by Carl Faberge are alive and well in the hands of artists working in Russia today.
